Onion Pakora Recipe


Onion pakora is a famous Indian snack generally eaten between the meals. It is made of a crispy fried onion combined with chickpea flour and other spices. It is a lip smacking and mouth watering dish which also tastes good. Indian people usually have this recipe during rainy season and winters.

  • 2 onions sliced
  • 2 green chilli, finely chopped
  • 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • chopped few curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
  • pinch of hing or asafoetida
  • 1 cup besan or gram flour
  • ¼ tsp ajwain or caraway seeds
  • 2 tbsp rice flour
  • 3/4th tsp salt


  • Firstly, Take two thinly sliced onions in a bowl.
  • Add chopped green chilies , 1 inch ginger, 2 green chilli, few curry leaves, 2 tbsp coriander leaves, ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp chilli powder, ¼ tsp ajwain and pinch of asafortida.
  • Now add one cup besan or chickpea flour , 2 tbsp rice flour and ½ tsp salt.Combine well making sure to squeeze onions well.
  • Without adding any water squeeze out the onions until the wetness is discharged.
  • Mash and combine all the ingredients till dough is formed.
  • If onions don’t unleash water, then sprinkle few drops of water.
  • Make small ball size pakoras and deep fry.
  • Fry on medium flame until the pakora turns tender and golden brown
  • Remove all the pakoras from the oil and place them on kitchen paper towel so it will soak excess oil.
  • Finally, Drain over paper towel and serve onion pakodas with tea, tomato sauce or coriander chutney.
