Sabudana Khichdi Recipe


Sabudana Khichdi is a popular Indian dish. Indian people had this recipe during Hindu fasting days. It is made from sabudana also known as soaked sago. This dish is free from onion and garlic also we can say that it’s a no onion no garlic dish. Generally, in a fast, it is allowed to eat no grain food. Sabudana is one of them. According to Ayurveda, Sabudana can be effective for our health as it maintains body temperature and helps to remove excess heat from our body.

  • 1 Cup Sabudana (Sago or tapioca Pearls)
  • 2 Medium Sized boil potatoes
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • 1-2 Green Chillies
  • 1/4 Cup Peanuts
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Black Pepper Powder (Kali Mirch)
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt or Rock Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Ghee or butter


  • Rinse the sabudana in running water and soak in 6-7 cups of water for two to three hours. Make sure that the soaked sabudana remains soft. If not, then, soak it for another one and half hour.
  • Now boil the potatoes, peel them and cut into cubes. Then grind the peanuts in a very grinder and keep of these things aside till needed.
  • Heat ghee or butter in a frying pan Add curry leaves in it. Add cumin seeds and chopped green chilies and give it a quick stir.
  • Saute for a minute and add potato cubes in the pan. Now mix all the spices and then cook till the potatoes turns mashy.
  • Now add soaked sabudana or sago along with grated coconut and ground peanuts.
  • Mix all the ingredients well and saute for 4-5 minutes. Finally, sprinkle some water within the pan so that sabudana does not flip sticky and squishy.
  • Add a pinch of rock salt or sendha namak.
  • Now switch off the flame and transfer it into a bowl.
  • Sprinkle some coriander leaves and served hot.
