Chicken Chettinad Recipe


Chicken chettinad is a classic South Indian recipe. It’s a popular chicken curry, cooked in some authentic Chettinad paste laced with coconut and onions. It is made of chicken marinated in yoghurt, turmeric and a paste of red chilies, kalpasi, coconut, poppy seeds, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, black pepper, ground nuts, onions and garlic.

  • 100 gms tomatoes
  • 2 gms cardamoms
  • 25 gms coriander leaves
  • 5 gms cumin
  • 2 gms curry leaves
  • 2 gms cloves
  • 10 gms turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • For Chetinnad paste:
  • 100 gms coconut
  • 50 gms ginger
  • 100 gms onions
  • 50 gms garlic
  • 20 gms cumin seeds
  • 10 gms red chillies
  • 50 gram fennel seeds
  • 25 gms peppercorns


  • Firstly, clean the chicken and cut them into small square shaped sizes.
  • Add turmeric powder, lemon juice and salt to the chicken. Marinate them for 15-20 minutes.
  • Heat the oil in a pan and add cumin, cardamom, cloves ,cinnamon. Saute for a minute.
  • Now add chopped onions along with curry leaves and saute them till onion turns into golden brown color.
  • Add tomatoes to the mixture, saute till the tomatoes turn soft and mashy.
  • Now add marinated chicken in the pan. Saute for another 10 minutes.
  • After this method, cover the lid and simmer them for 15 minutes.
  • Switch off the flame. Transfer the chicken chettinad in a serving bowl.
  • Sprinkle some coriander leaves and served hot with chapati or basmati rice.
