  • Marination For Butter Chicken Recipe:
  • 1/2 Kg of Chicken
  • 3/4 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1/4 tbsp Salt
  • 1/2 Tbsp Red Chili Powder
  • 3/4 Tbsp Fenugreek Leaves
  • 1/8 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 to 3/4th Teaspoon Garam Masala Powder
  • 3/4 Teaspoon Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • For Gravy:
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 Tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1 Cinnamon (Dalchini)
  • 2 Cloves
  • 1-2 Green Chilies
  • 4 Medium Size Tomatoes
  • 1 Tbsp Red Chili Powder
  • 14 Cashew Nuts
  • 1/2 Tbsp Garam Masala Powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp Sugar
  • Salt as per Taste
  • Chilled Cream - 100 grams
  • 2 Tbsp Coriander Leaves


  • Marination:
  • Firstly, Take a large bowl. marinate chicken cubes with yogurt, kasuri methi, ginger garlic paste, turmeric, oil, lemon, salt, garam masala and chili powder. Keep aside for 20 minutes.
  • Refrigerate the whole mixture for 3 to 4 hours.
  • Now take a blender. Add tomatoes along with cashews and make it a smooth paste.
  • Method for Grilling Chicken:
  • Grill all the chicken pieces on oven or on stove on high flame.
  • Grill untill all the meat cooked perfectly. Grill for 30 minutes.
  • Method of making Butter Chicken:
  • Take a pan. Heat butter. Saute cinnamon, cloves and cardamons for atleast 1 minute.
  • Add green chilies, ginger – garlic paste. fry till raw smell disappears.
  • Add tomato puree to the pan. Saute for 1 minute.
  • Add red chilli powder, sugar and salt. Cook till oil separates from puree.
  • Pour 1 cup of water. Add chicken cubes and allow it to simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Cook till chicken cubes becomes soft and mashy. Add garam masala and kasuri methi for flavour.
  • Allow it to simmer for another 5 minutes. Add chilled cream.
  • Make sure that while adding chilled cream, the gas flame must be low. 
  • Swith off the flame. Garnish This Yummy Butter Chicken with coriander leaves and some extra cream. 
  • Serve this delicious recipe with Naan, Basmati Rice and Paratha.


What exactly is Butter Chicken Recipe?

Chunks of Chicken cubes are firstly cut into equal pieces, marinate and then cooked with creamy tomato-based gravy. It is also known as Murgh Makhni. It was first invented in Delhi, by Kundal Lal Gujral, the owner of the restaurant Moti Mahal.

Also, Delhi Style Butter Chicken is famous for its rich textures, its smoothness and of course because of its origin. Although, there are more than 100 types of Butter Chicken available in Delhi.

How Butter Chicken is prepared?

To make this delicious and authentic Butter Chicken Recipe, firstly we need to marinate the chunks of chicken with tomato sauce and grill it. You can also marinate chicken cubes in a pan, tandoor or oven.

Secondly, we need to cook chicken cubes in a tomato – cashew gravy. Make sure the gravy is cooked in butter, not in oil or ghee.

After adding chicken cubes to the gravy, allow it to cook for at least half an hour so that the chicken cubes completely cooked and mixed with the gravy.

Tips for making Butter Chicken

To make Butter Chicken, one of the important steps is Marination. Marination gives chicken pieces a smooth, spicy flavour.

Yoghurt plays an important part in the marination. Yoghurt tenderizes the chicken pieces so don’t skip it in any case.

Avoid the usage of onion in this recipe. Adding onion can changes the taste of this delicious recipe.

Cashew, Almonds and Cream is an important part of the gravy. These ingredients give this recipe a rich flavour.

You can also make the gravy before roasting the chicken cubes. If you make gravy first, then you can refrigerate it. When you want to eat the Butter Chicken, just grill the marinated chicken cubes and add to the tomato gravy.


This recipe can be best served with Naan, Kulcha, Jeera Rice, Roti or Paratha.
