Matar Paneer Recipe:-

Matar Paneer Recipe is a delicious creamy recipe and is quite popular all over India. It is riched with cream, Paneer (cheese) and green peas. In addition to this, Matar Paneer is often counted as a North Indian Recipe as it is mainly eaten in Punjab, Haryana And Uttar Pradesh. It is generally made during the Winter season. However, it can be made anytime in a year by using frozen peas. This recipe can be best served with Jeera Rice, Naan, Paratha or Phulka.

Steps of Making Matar Paneer Curry or Gravy:-

Matar Paneer Recipe is incomplete without Curry or gravy. We can also say that Curry is the main part of this recipe.

This exotic curry can be simply made by Onion and Tomato sauce and some Indian spices. Cashews are also added to the curry to give it a rich, smooth flavor.

Furthermore, To make a curry, firstly, we need to fry onions along with tomatoes, cloves, and ginger-garlic paste. After that, saute for 2 minutes till all the onions turn to golden brown color and tomatoes become soft and mashy.

After this, we required to blend this mixture to form a smooth paste. Lastly, we need to fry this onion tomato paste with all the Indian spices such as a bay leaf, jeera, mustard seeds, cloves, cinnamon, etc.

  • For Tomato Puree
  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 3-4 cloves
  • 2 Cardamom
  • 1 cup onions, chopped into 4 pieces
  • 2 cups of tomatoes, chopped
  • 8- 10 cashews
  • salt to taste
  • For Matar gravy Or Curry
  • 2-3 tbsp oil
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1 Dalchini or Cinnamon
  • 1/4 Tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 Tbsp Red Chili Powder
  • 3/4th Tbsp Coriander powder
  • 1 Tsp Garam Masala
  • 3/4 Tbsp Coriander powder
  • 2 Cups of Water
  • 1 cup fresh green peas
  • 250 grams of Paneer or Cottage Cheese
  • 1 green chili
  • 4 tbsp Fresh Cream
  • 2 Tbsp Coriander leaves
  • 1 Tbsp Dry Fenugreek leaves or Kasuri Methi
  • 1/2 Cup Salt


  • Making Matar paneer Masala Paste

  • Soak paneer in a bowl with 2 cups of hot water. Soak paneer cubes for at least 15-20 minutes.
  • Take a pan. Heat 2 tbsp of oil on medium flame.
  • Add 2 Cardamoms, ginger-garlic paste. Saute for 1 minute.
  • Add chopped onions to the pan, fry till they turn to golden brown colour.
  • Add 2 cups of chopped tomatoes,  cashews, turmeric powder, and salt.
  • Saute for 2-3 minutes till tomatoes and cashews, become soft and mashy.
  • Blend this mixture to make a smooth fine paste.
  • Steps of Making Matar Paneer Recipe

  • Heat 2 tbsp oil on medium flame.
  • Add 1 bay leaf and 1 cinnamon. Saute for 2 minutes.
  • Pour onion-tomato mixture to the pan. Add red chili powder, masala powder and coriander powder.
  • Saute for 2 minutes till oil release from the mixture.
  • Now add green peas to the mixture. Simultaneously add 2 cups of water.
  • Mix everything well till the gravy becomes thicker. Add more water if required.
  • Now cover the pan, and cook the gravy or curry on medium heat.
  • Add fenugreek leaves and salt. Adjust the amount of salt as per the requirement.
  • Add 250 grams of cubed paneer along with green chili to the pan.
  • Let the mixture cook for 2 minutes so that the paneer absorbs all the masala’s.
  • Sprinkle some coriander leaves to the matter panner. Also, add some cream.  Adding Cream to Matar Paneer recipe gives a nice, smooth texture.
